Gordon Cisar writes: The 'Letter to the Editor' of the APS authored by C.C. Mundt (Volume 80, No. 3, 1990) presents an alternative view to the 'probabilities hypothesis' of stepwise acquisition of virulence. As he explains, his experience indicates that 'an elaboration of the opposite view is needed." The contrary view that is presented would have significant implications on the development of resistant gene pyramids and gene cassettes. It is a short read that presents some thoughtful evidence.
